18”x24” painting on panel
'Tide Switching' portrays scattered islands and the jagged shore off the coast of Vinalhaven Island, Maine. In this spot the onrush and retreat of the tides are powerful and visible, and I used line to emphasize that movement. In fact I became trapped outside the cove once in a kayak and was forced to remain offshore until the tide switched and I could paddle back in! The foreground patterns represent the rock and sealife while two birds are soaring in a moody sky. This painting is created with acrylic paint and artist designed, carved, and printed collage papers on a cradled birch panel. It is deeply layered and highly textured.
