Fog 10x10
Original Painting by Kelly B Desrosiers, 10”x10”x1.25”, ready to hang.
Fog is a common presence on the coast of Maine. Without fog the shallow soils of Maine islands could not support the spruce adorned with strands of Old Man’s Beard because the fog delivers nutrients in the moist air. Incidentally, Usnea (as it is also known) is a lichen with antibiotic properties! The more I learn about fog the more I appreciate it. Artists love fog because it is a challenge to represent in any media and requires control over subtle value shifts from light to dark. Hopefully my painting shows the beauty of fog.
This piece is a mixed media artwork involving a multi-layered technique that I evolved over several years. A richly textured surface, with luminous color and visual depth results. For me, the overlapping patterns in layers of transparency and complexity represent the intertwined ecological relationships of this special place.
This painting has been created on a cradled wood panel with black painted edges, no additional framing required, with hanging wire attached. I handcraft each and every step of my process in my own modest home studio in Unity, Maine. Mine is a one-woman operation, start to finish!
