Life Boat 18x24
Original Painting by Kelly B Desrosiers, 18”x24”x1.25", ready to hang.
This painting evolved over a long period of time, over a year or two. It started as a tree of life but morphed into a symbol of a lifeboat of sorts, containing all life in the form of a tree rising out of a canoe shape. That is the source of the title. From a rather dark color scheme the living green arose to dominate. This painting has over twenty layers of collage, including cut edges with highly textured relief. The canoe form has been a constant in my art for over 30 years. I trace its power for me to the children’s book “Paddle to the Sea” which I adored as a child growing up close to the the northern source of the Mississippi River. I used to launch many small bark canoes (before I knew launching symbolic things was a “thing”) and all I recall is that they felt like missives into the future, hopes, dreams of adventure, and an awareness of the larger world.
This piece is a mixed media artwork involving a multi-layered technique that I evolved over several years. A richly textured surface, with luminous color and visual depth results. For me, the overlapping patterns in layers of transparency and complexity represent the intertwined ecological relationships of this special place.
This painting has been created on a cradled wood panel with black painted edges, no additional framing required, with hanging wire attached. I handcraft each and every step of my process in my own modest home studio in Unity, Maine. Mine is a one-woman operation, start to finish!
